Welcome to the Taiping Institute 【太平武馆】, dedicated to the practice, teaching, research, preservation and development the traditional chinese martial arts.

In this site we provide insights and resources for the study of Traditional Chinese Martial Arts 【传统武术】 (Kung Fu/Traditional Wushu). To learn more about the various martial arts, select the respective region of China on the map below:

Beijing Chuojiao+Beijing Chuojiaofanziquan 【戳脚翻子拳】

One of the most popular branches of Chuojiao can be atested to one great Master Wu Binlou, who brought Chuojiao into the capital Bejing expounding its theories, contents & practices whilst promoting the style in the capital. Descended from the great Masters Wei Changyi and his disciple Wei Zhangkui, Chuojiao Fanziquan is complete martial art renowned and held in high regards.

yuefei+ Yue Fei's Thesis [岳武穆九要论]

"If you see an opening, do not strike, and if you see the opening, do not advance. The fist should not strike the false rising and also not strike the false lowering. When the hands rise, the feet must fall. When the feet fall, the hands must rise. The heart must move first and the Yi must defeat the opponent. The body will attack the opponent, and the stepping must be better than the opponent's " Outlining some essential principles for martial effectivness

Zhangzhou Wushu+ Zhangzhou [漳州传统武术]

In the south of Fujian Province is known for an abundance of martial arts practice. The Hung Men rebellious activities were centred here. Being close to Neighbouring Guangdong, the arts from here had a large impact on the Hakka and Canton styles. So what are the mysteries of Zhangzhou's martial arts schools? what do they practice? what is their history and lineages ? Learn more about its fascinating yet rarely popularized martial arts.

Tang Quan+ Tang Quan [唐拳]

In Nan Pi County, Hebei Province the style of Tang Quan is well known. It is a large and complex system that includes very versatile and effective techniques. Seldom practiced outside of the area as previous masters were selective in their descendants, the style is gradually making its mark in the Zhong Yuan Martial arts world. In this article, Tang Quan is introduced, including its history and development, contents and features as well as some videos. In addition we outline some of the secrets or principles of the style.

Wujiaquan+ Wu Jia Quan [巫家拳]

Wu Family boxing was developed by Master Wu Bida (1751-1812), who was originally from Fujian and latter moved to Hunan Province. Characterized by its Liu Zhou (6 Elbows) and Ba Quan (8 Fists), the style emphasises hand techniques and on the gate theories and coupled with both bridge work common to many of the southern styles, whilst also applying the gentle leading and disbalancing methods of more softer or internal styles.

Hongmen+ Hong Men [洪门] ,

During the Qing dynasty a movement by the Ming loyalists against the Qing government resulted in the formation of the Tian Di Hui (Heaven & Earth Society). It became a key group of resistance which supported many rebellious movements from its over 300 years of existence. The impact of the group on culutral traditions, martial arts & patriotic thought have impacted many until this day. Explore the society and its branches during those days and its descendants which inevitably became the Triads.

Piguazhang
+ Piguazhang [劈挂掌]

Uniqe art from Yan Shan and Nan Pi county in Hebei, its origin, contents and features are outlined. Since the Ming Dynasty, Piguaquan has been renowned for its hacking or chopping motions and extreme speed. Originally intended to suit fully armoured warriors with its open motions, the style has evolved into main branches: Nanpi Piguaquan made famous by Guo Changsheng and Yanshan Piguaquan as practiced by the Ma Family

+ Erlang Men - Chun Qiu Dao [二郎门:春秋大刀]

Erlangquan is one of the traditional martial arts from Hebei Province. Here the Spring Autumn Long Handle Broadsword is performed.

Erlang Shen is a mythical god in Chinese Folklore, known for helping to regulate the great floods and as the nephew of the Jade Emperor. He carries a Trident Spear, a bow, and has a faithful Dog as a companion. In a martial sense,

Erlang also referred to two young gents, potraying that this skillset was originally only practiced as a 2 man combat set. Latter practitioners isolated the movements and developed the single set as well. Erlangquan's 8 sections of Changquan are based on the Bagua (Trigrams) of Heaven, Lake, Fire, Thunder, Wind, Water, Moutain and Earth. There are also many traditional Weapons practiced.

Master Ge Chunyan - Baguazhang


Singapore continues to be the new or second home for many Chinese Martial Arts Masters. Ms. Ge Chun Yan is no exception, both a famous wushu champion with 8 gold medals, 5 times national Ba Gua Zhang Champion and a member of the prestigous Beijing Wushu Team.

Since 2004, Ms Ge Chun Yan is the head of the Ba Fang Wushu Training Centre, which teaches on the East Coast of Singapore. The Centre also conducts classes in Chen Style Taiijquan and Wushu.

Ms. Ge Chun Yan is a disciples of the Baguazhang Master Sun Zhiyun, teaching the complete curriculum of Cheng Style Baguazhang. Also a disciple of Feng Zhiqiang (disciple of Chen Fake), in the art of Chen Style Taijiquan.
